Designing for daily impact in respiratory care.
Asthma affects over 260 million people worldwide. By 2032, COPD is expected to be the world’s leading cause of death. Yet research shows 86% of inhaler users make at least one error every day, and half experience a critical error, leading to poor symptom control, unnecessary hospitalisation, and increased mortality risk. aflo set out to change this. Working with parent company Respiratory Analytics, our challenge was to create a digital product experience that empowers patients, improves adherence, and supports clinicians in making smarter decisions.

Understanding patients, clinicians, and systems
This work began with over 100 conversations with patients, clinicians, and stakeholders. We mapped daily routines, uncovered barriers to correct inhaler use, and explored the pressures faced by healthcare teams. From this, we co-created patient journey maps and storyboards that captured the lived experience of managing chronic respiratory illness.

A holistic, human-centred solution
The solution combines three distinct, connected interfaces. A companion app provides guidance, reminders, and data visualisation to support patients day to day, while a smart inhaler detects technique errors and promotes better adherence. Meanwhile, a clinical dashboard equips healthcare teams with real-time data to inform treatment and improve outcomes. Together, they form a seamless ecosystem designed around the needs of both patients and clinicians.
Breathing life into the future of healthcare
aflo is more than an app or device; it’s a glimpse into the future of connected health. By combining intuitive mobile app design, sensor technology, and data-driven insights, it helps patients take control of their conditions and provides clinicians with the tools they need to deliver personalised care.
