Carbon Reduction Statement Version 2.0 (FY2025)

Carbon Reduction Statement Version 2.0 (FY2025)

Commitment to Sustainability and Carbon Reduction

At Big Motive, we recognise the urgent need to address climate change and reduce the environmental impact of our operations. As a leading human-centred design and digital transformation consultancy, we are committed to delivering sustainable outcomes through responsible business practices, transparent carbon reporting and continuous improvement.

Working in partnership with CarbonFit, we have completed a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment in accordance with PPN 06/21, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and ISO 14064-1 standards. This assessment provides a structured pathway towards achieving Net Zero emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

Carbon Footprint Performance

Our FY2025 carbon footprint assessment demonstrates continued progress in reducing direct operational emissions. Since our baseline year of FY2023, we have successfully eliminated Scope 1 emissions and significantly reduced Scope 2 emissions through changes to our office environment and energy consumption practices.

Our verified FY2025 emissions were:

  • Scope 1: 0.00 tCO₂e

  • Scope 2: 4.88 tCO₂e

  • Scope 3: 43.78 tCO₂e

This results in a total carbon footprint of 48.66 tCO₂e for the reporting period. While overall emissions remain broadly consistent with our baseline year, Scope 3 emissions now represent the largest proportion of our footprint, primarily driven by business travel, employee commuting and wider value-chain activities. This has informed the focus of our future carbon reduction programme.

Net Zero Commitment

Big Motive is fully committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.

To support this commitment, we have adopted the following carbon reduction objectives:

  • Reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 against our baseline year.

  • Maintain zero direct fossil fuel emissions wherever operationally possible.

  • Engage with at least 80% of our supply chain on carbon reduction initiatives by 2026.

  • Develop Science Based Targets aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

  • Achieve Net Zero across Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

Sustainable Digital Service Delivery

As a digital consultancy, we understand that sustainability extends beyond our physical operations. We design and deliver digital products and services using approaches that minimise environmental impact while maintaining performance, accessibility and usability.

Our teams employ efficient coding practices, optimise data transfer and API usage, reduce unnecessary processing requirements and utilise modern compression techniques to lower the energy demands associated with digital services. We continue to promote sustainable digital design principles across all client engagements.

Energy and Resource Efficiency

Big Motive has made significant progress in reducing operational energy consumption through the transition to an all-electric office environment and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies.

Our offices utilise LED lighting throughout, and we continue to replace equipment with high-efficiency alternatives as part of our ongoing asset management programme. We also work with building stakeholders to explore opportunities for renewable electricity procurement and improved energy performance.

Hybrid Working and Remote Operations

Our hybrid working model supports both employee wellbeing and carbon reduction objectives. By enabling flexible working arrangements, we reduce commuting emissions and minimise the environmental impact associated with traditional office-based operations.

We encourage employees to adopt sustainable home-working practices, including the use of energy-efficient devices, responsible energy consumption and reduced digital waste where possible. Homeworking emissions are measured and included within our carbon reporting framework to ensure a complete understanding of our operational footprint.

Sustainable Travel and Transport

Business travel remains one of the most significant contributors to our Scope 3 emissions profile. To address this, Big Motive prioritises digital collaboration tools wherever practical, reducing the need for unnecessary travel while maintaining effective client engagement and project delivery.

We maintain a policy that excludes the purchase or lease of petrol and diesel vehicles, supporting the transition towards hybrid and electric alternatives. Employees are also encouraged to use lower-carbon transport options, supported by eco-driver training and awareness initiatives designed to reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions.

Future initiatives include the introduction of electric or hybrid-only vehicle hire arrangements and further measures to reduce travel-related emissions across our operations.

Sustainable Procurement and Supply Chain Engagement

Recognising that the majority of our emissions now sit within Scope 3, we are strengthening our approach to sustainable procurement and supplier engagement.

We are embedding sustainability considerations into procurement decisions, encouraging suppliers to measure and reduce their own emissions and prioritising partners who demonstrate strong environmental performance. This approach supports both our carbon reduction objectives and the wider transition to a low-carbon economy.

Circular Economy and Waste Reduction

Big Motive applies circular economy principles wherever practical. We seek to maximise the lifespan of technology and equipment through reuse, refurbishment and responsible recycling.

Where appropriate, hardware is redeployed internally, donated to community organisations or processed through certified recycling channels. We continue to develop waste reduction practices that support resource efficiency across our operations.

Accessibility, Inclusion and Sustainability

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental considerations to include social value and digital inclusion.

We design digital services in accordance with recognised accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.2 AA principles. Through inclusive research, accessible user experiences and equitable design practices, we aim to create digital services that are usable by as many people as possible while delivering long-term social and environmental value.

Governance and Accountability

Big Motive maintains a structured approach to sustainability governance. Responsibility for coordinating carbon reduction activities, monitoring progress and supporting compliance with PPN 06/21 sits within our sustainability leadership team.

Annual carbon footprint assessments are undertaken in partnership with CarbonFit using recognised reporting methodologies and government conversion factors. Progress against targets is reviewed regularly, and our Carbon Reduction Plan is updated annually to reflect organisational performance and emerging best practice.

Looking Ahead

The elimination of Scope 1 emissions and a substantial reduction in Scope 2 emissions demonstrate the positive impact of our sustainability initiatives to date. Our next phase of activity will focus on addressing Scope 3 emissions through supply chain engagement, sustainable travel policies, renewable energy procurement, carbon literacy training and the development of Science Based Targets.

By working collaboratively with employees, clients, suppliers and industry partners, Big Motive remains committed to achieving Net Zero emissions and delivering meaningful environmental, social and economic value through our work.
